Abscesses and Fibrosis of the Gastrocnemius Muscle - Medical Illustration, Human Anatomy Drawing
This illustration contrasts normal and pathological conditions of the lower leg muscles and compartments. In the normal anatomy views, the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, encased in their fascial coverings, are healthy and structurally intact, with the Achilles tendon attached posteriorly. In the pre-operative condition, significant pathology is visible, with approximately 75% of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles replaced by fibrotic tissue and abscesses. The cross-sectional views of the lower leg highlight the location and extent of abscesses and fibrosis, primarily affecting the anterior and superficial posterior compartments. These compartments are shown with abnormal tissue infiltrating the muscle and connective tissue spaces, disrupting normal muscle structure and causing compartmental inflammation and degradation.
